Rural
In rural villages walls and doors of many houses are covered with traditional painted designs. The villages consist of large clusters of circular or rectangular one room houses built of solid turf, Kimberley brick (unburned clay), or dressed stone. Traditionally the roofs were thatched but more modern houses use corrugated iron, as are roofs in many other places in Sub Saharan Africa The traditional Lesotho house is called a mokhoro and is built in the rondavel style. This word means circular and the houses are made with local materials. The walls are usually constructed from stones with a mixture of sand, soil and dung. The roof is thatched with a process that can be done in as little as one week when made by a skilled artisan who will sew one area at a time, starting from the base up to the top. The longer it takes, the more weathered it gets to form a waterproof seal. Urban
